What people
are saying about Turning Pro.....
A Journey of
Understanding
Vieldhouse forces the reader to confront his or her own
racial prejudices, whether we want to admit we have them or not.
A must read for parents and children who want a better
understanding of differing cultures. An excellent effort for a
new author with a compelling story to tell.

Dr. Joseph Atalla, a professor at Columbia University and a
member of the Paterson Board of Education, said that “Turning
Pro” is “...an exceptional read...a crossover book equivalent
to ‘Animal Farm.’ A teenager will look at this book and read it
as a boxing story. An adult, with its positive social/racial
theme, will read it as a human interest story.” Dr. Attala
referred to Kevin as a “talented writer,” and has recommended
the book to become part of the Paterson public school
curriculum.

'Exceptional & Heartfelt
'Turning Pro' is not only about boxing, it's also moving and
inspirational. The lives of two very different men collide and
the remarkable story teaches that men stemming from different
races can compliment each other and offer motivation and mutual
respect for one another. This book was a page-turner for me and
the profound and unexpected ending left me in awe as it all came
together. 'Turning Pro' did not lack humor as this story
emanated pure heart & integrity leaving you feeling connected to
these characters. This book can inspire a vast variety of
readers from high school students to mature and wise adults.

“Turning Pro.” Though it is a work of fiction, the book draws
upon personal experiences both in and out of the boxing ring,
and how life can be affected both positively and negatively by
engaging in the sport. "Turning Pro” reflects a knowledgeable
and impartial attitude toward the pugilistic sport that has as
many ups as it has downs. The plot of “Turning Pro” concerns two
fighters, one black and one white, who begin as sparring
partners in a Paterson gym and become good friends. They both
hope to have success in the Golden Gloves tournament, which
could lead to a professional career, as they help each other
along the way. Life lessons are experienced by both boxers, who
encounter the positive aspects of boxing as well as the
corruption that is too often associated with the sport, and the
effects on the quality of life for participants and their
families.

This book is amazing. I couldn't help but read it. It
took me a while to read but once I started I couldn't stop. The
hate and the friendship, good times and the bad times. The
ending really surprised me, I was shocked by the outcome, the
weird twist of it all. But, it was still touching after all.

Unexpected page
turner
This was not a book I would have read on my own but I
happened to find it around when I least expected to have some
quiet time to myself. Being a mother of a toddler I don't have
much time and usually only read at night but after a few pages
of this book I couldn't put it down. I was overwhelmed with
curiosity about a world I know little about. I actually finished
this book in only 3 day's I just had to find out how it ended.
It's such a good story that I only hope it has a touch of truth
behind it, the unexpected racial issues were written about in
this story gave me an education on another way to look at the
world while the 'love story' (friendship) added an extra twist
and really made it quite enjoyable. I highly recommend this book
to everyone men, women, fathers and mothers. There is a little
something for everyone. Actually if the title were different I
may have picked it up sooner....

Very Good
Reading this book really gave me a look into the
life of boxers from different races. The ending left me stunned,
inspired, and moved me beyond words. I read it with relative
ease and the book allows for access into a racially motivated
boxing gym where two boxers go at it and then become friends,
along the way struggling with many of life's hardships. A very
good read, I highly recommend it to children and adults alike.
An enthusiast
A humble writer
writes a jolting book
When a writer can write a book about two so very
different people that are really quite the same it is an amazing
feat. This book is one that your grandmother can read and pass
it down to your youngest sibling. All will experience tears,
laughs of joy, and wisdom that can only be learned in a sweat
filled gym. Easy read, once you start it, you won't put it down.
I can’t wait for the next book.
